Mission, aims and methods of scouting.
We all want our children to grow into confident adults. Which is why it’s so crucial to begin instilling positive self-esteem and leadership abilities from an early age. It’s also important to couple these lessons with an encouragement of compassion and humility. The mission of the Boy Scouts of America is to prepare young people to make ethical and moral choices over their lifetimes by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Law.
We do this by following specific objectives commonly referred to as the “Aims of Scouting.” They are character development, leadership development, citizenship training, and personal fitness.
There are 8 methods to accomplish these objectives, and our leaders are trained in these. Importantly, the scouting program encourages Scouts to learn and practice leadership skills. Every Scout has the opportunity to participate in both shared and total leadership situations.
Understanding the concepts of leadership and becoming a servant leader helps a Scout accept the leadership role of others and guides them towards participating citizenship and character development.
This concept is especially important to us in Troop 62 and Crew 62, which are "boy led" units. This means that the scouts are in charge of leading their units, they decide on and execute their own program, select their own youth leaders, and handle difficulties and conflict themselves as much as possible.
The role of the adults is to step back as much as possible and only step up in situations that the youth cannot handle themselves. This process is not always easy and straightforward, and it sometimes includes allowing the youth to fail. But it is rewarding to see so many youth grow into confident leaders with competencies in so many different areas.
Come visit one of our meetings and see this process in action!
The Denver Park Hill - Central Park area is home to several very active scout units which serve both boys and girls between the ages of 5 and 21. See below for your options. Our own Troop 62 serves boys between the ages of 11 and 17, and our Crew 62 serves both boys and girls between the ages of 14 and 21. We would be happy to refer you to one of the other local units as appropriate and as requested.
Scouts are awesome. They build character & experience new things!
Scouting helps youth develop academic skills, self-confidence, ethics, leadership skills, and citizenship skills that influence their adult lives.
Scouting make a difference.
Scout-age youth experience dramatic physical and emotional growth. Scouting offers them opportunities to channel much of that change into productive endeavors and to find the answers they are seeking for many of their questions.
Gain outdoor skills.
In the outdoors, youth have opportunities to acquire skills that make them more self-reliant. They can explore canoe and hiking trails and complete challenges they first thought were beyond their ability.
We are inclusive.
We welcome everybody. Read our inclusion statement here.
